SANDY — Officials say a blown transformer is to blame for a freeway closure that caused heavy traffic delays in the Salt Lake Valley Sunday evening.
Officials with the Utah Highway Patrol said sparking power lines fell onto I-15 near 9000 South when a nearby transformer blew shortly after 7 p.m.
All southbound lanes of I-15 were closed in the area, and traffic was diverted off the freeway at the I-215 South interchange, while emergency crews worked to remove the power lines from the roadway.
The closure lasted more than an hour, and was lifted shortly before 9 p.m.
The cause of the transformer malfunction was being investigated Sunday night.
