Wildfire updates: Residents being evacuated in southwest Utah County near Pole Creek Fire

SALT LAKE CITY — A fire threatened several homes in Herriman Wednesday before moving away from the city later Wednesday evening.

Another fire in Juab County grew more than 1,000 acres Wednesday, prompting evacuations in nearby Utah County later Wednesday evening.

Evacuation orders in the Rose Canyon area in Herriman will be lifted at 9 p.m., Herriman City officials reported Wednesday evening. By 8 p.m., no homes were threatened and no injuries had been reported, Unified fire officials said.

A resident digging with a backhoe accidentally struck a power box, which sparked the fire, officials said.

A field fire sparked Wednesday afternoon near 3005 S. 1030 West in South Salt Lake. A bus bridge was briefly activated between Redwood Junction and the River Trail stops on the TRAX Green Line because the fire was near the tracks, according to Utah Transit Authority.

The trains were back to running on a normal schedule by 4 p.m., according to UTA.

Evacuations in place due to Pole Creek Fire near Mount Nebo

Emergency personnel are evacuating people along Nebo Creek Road in Utah County west of U.S. Highway 89 due to the Pole Creek Fire. The fire has grown to 1,500 acres, Uinta-Wasatch-Cache National Forest officials reported on Twitter. The fire started on Sept. 6 in the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway area in Juab County and is lightning-caused. It grew more than 1,000 acres on Wednesday. Though the fire began in Juab County, the area being evacuated Wednesday evening is in Utah County.

Roads open, evacuations to be lifted as crews continue fighting Herriman fire

Fire officials are hoping to fully contain a blaze in Herriman on Thursday. The fire, now being referred to as the Rosecrest Fire, started southwest of Herriman near Rose Canyon. A resident who was digging with a backhoe hit a power box, which started the fire, officials said. Fire crews will continue working the fire until 9 p.m. Wednesday and will pick back up at 7 a.m. Thursday. Evacuations are expected to be lifted at 9 p.m. Wednesday, and all roads are open in the area, officials said. As of 8:45 p.m., no homes are threatened and no injuries have been reported, officials said.

Crews gain containment of Herriman fire burning near Rose Canyon

A fire that threatened a handful of homes is slowly moving away from the city, and fire crews are gaining control of the blaze, Herriman City officials reported Wednesday evening. The fire was first reported just after 3 p.m. near 7079 W. Rose Canyon Road in Herriman. It has burned at least three acres, according to fire officials. By 6:40 p.m., fire crews were securing the edge of the fire area, and at least 65 percent of the fire was being controlled with hose lines, city officials said on Twitter. The fire is located near the Step Mountain area, and is moving down the back side of the mountain away from Herriman, according to city officials. Most of the fire activity is on the west side, officials said.

The edge of the fire is being secured with hose lines now tackling 65% of the fire. Most activity is on the west flank towards the top. @FireAuthority is working to get more personnel to that area.

Aid available for people displaced by Herriman fire near Rose Canyon

The Red Cross of Utah and Nevada is providing aid for people displaced due to a new wildfire that sparked in Herriman on Wednesday afternoon. An evacuation center has been set up at Butterfield Canyon Elementary School, 6860 Mary Leizan Lane, in Herriman. Salt Lake County Animal Services is available to help anyone who evacuated large or small animals. Anyone in need of help with animals is asked to call 801-743-7045.

Herriman fire threatening 4 homes, but moving away, officials say

Four homes are near a fire burning in Rose Canyon in Herriman, but the fire is moving away from the homes, officials said. About 3 acres had burned as of 3:30 p.m., Unified fire officials said on Twitter. Evacuations were still taking place as of 3:30 p.m., according to Unified fire officials, and a few outbuildings were burned in the fire.

Pole Creek Fire in Juab County grows to 400 acres

The Pole Creek Fire, burning in the Mount Nebo Scenic Byway area in Juab County, has grown to 400 acres, or about .6 square miles, as of Wednesday afternoon, fire officials said. The fire started on Sept. 6 and is lightning-caused. Dry, warm, windy weather has contributed to the fire's growth, Santaquin fire officials said on Facebook. The fire is expected to grow in the north and east in the coming days, officials said. Smoke is visible from parts of I-15 and U.S. Highway 89, officials said. Firefighters will continue to monitor and contain the blaze while allowing it to burn accumulated dead and down fuels and improve wildlife habitat, officials said.

Delays expected on TRAX green line due to South Salt Lake fire

Expect delays between 10 and 15 minutes on northbound TRAX trains on the Green Line between the River Trail and Airport stops. A field fire is affecting train service in the area, according to Utah Transit Authority officials. As of 2 p.m., a bus bridge was operating between the Redwood Junction and River Trail stops due to the fire activity. The fire is burning near 3005 S. 1030 West, according to Unified fire officials.
