(KSL News) One of Hogle Zoo's three female African elephants has died.
For the last few weeks, 27-year-old Misha's physical health had been mysteriously deteriorating.
Extraordinary efforts were undertaken to diagnose and treat her condition with treatments including antibiotics, pain management and around-the-clock care. When it became obvious they couldn't save her, the zoo says it made the difficult decision to euthanize her last night.
"Misha received the best veterinary care available, however, due to their size, medical problems with elephants can be very challenging," said Hogle Zoo Senior Veterinarian Dr. Nancy Carpenter. "Numerous elephant experts were consulted and their years of experience, along with the over 60 years of combined experience of the Hogle Zoo elephant staff, were used to make the best choices in Misha's medical care."
Despite numerous tests, no definitive diagnosis could be determined. A necropsy will be performed to determine what Misha had.
