HOLLADAY — Members of Skyline High School's mountain biking team are learning a tough life lesson after a trailer carrying $10,000 worth of gear was stolen from their coach's driveway.

The trailer was parked outside coach Ty Loyola's Holladay home Tuesday when it disappeared in the middle of the night.

"I think they were in and out within a matter of minutes," Loyola said.

Fortunately no mountain bikes were in the trailer, but it was full of gear the team needs to get through their races — team tents, a bike rack, coolers, a stove.

"It's hard. It really is a hard thing," the coach said. "It's taken us four years to accumulate everything that was inside the trailer."

Loyola did everything right to try and keep his trailer safe — locked it, kept it close to his house and away from the road — and still someone was able to tow it away without being seen.

"I was shocked," said David Nielsen, a cyclist on the team. "(It) just kind of shows how desperate people are and what they'll do to get money."

The hardest part for Loyola is knowing how important mountain biking is to students like Nielsen.

"There's just something about seeing how it changes kids," he said. "It takes kids who are timid and shy, it takes their confidence way, way up."

For now, Loyola is trying to look at the crime as an opportunity for his athletes to learn about life. His message to them: "Remain positive — always remain positive."

"Something will come out of it positive, I know that for sure," Nielsen said.

If you've seen the mountain biking trailer anywhere, you're asked to contact your local police department.
