RIVERDALE — A man who police say hired another man to kill his daughter's boyfriend and then got into a fight with the alleged hitman for not holding up his end of the deal has been arrested along with the man he hired.

The bizarre case came to a head Thursday when both men called officers to complain about the other, Riverdale Police Sgt. Casey Warren said. The men had gotten into a fight over money.

Joseph Larry Lopez, 59, allegedly paid David Allen Northcutt, 40, several thousand dollars to kill his adult daughter's boyfriend, police said.

Warren did not disclose Friday why Lopez wanted the boyfriend dead or how long the two had been dating.

But when Northcutt didn't follow through with the killing, Lopez demanded his money back, Warren said. The men got into a verbal argument and then called police, each claiming a money dispute. Warren said it was because of the good questioning from officers that they learned of the alleged murder-for-hire plot.

The two men allegedly agreed on the plan last week, Warren said. Police declined to say Friday why Northcutt allegedly backed out of the deal.

Lopez was arrested and booked into the Weber County Jail for investigation of solicitation. Northcutt was booked for investigation of a homicide-related charge.

Formal charges will be screened by the Weber County Attorney's Office.
