SPANISH FORK — A motorcyclist was transported to the hospital with serious injuries after hitting a steel cable while evading officers Wednesday, police said.
A patrol sergeant attempted to stop the 31-year-old man after he passed the officer “at a high rate of speed” on his motorcycle on I-15, according to the Utah County Sheriff’s Office. After a failed stop attempt in the area of state Route 75 and 1600 West in Springville, the motorcyclist continued onto State Street.
“The sergeant ended the pursuit as the motorcycle entered into Provo city limits,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. “A short time later, Spanish Fork police observed the motorcycle in their city and attempted to stop it. The motorcyclist again fled from officers, however, Spanish Fork officers did not pursue.”
The pursuit was picked up again when Utah County deputies found the motorcyclist in the area of state Route 77 and River Lane. They followed the motorcyclist to 800 West near the Spanish Fork Airport, where the road was closed due to construction
The motorcyclist crashed after striking a steel cable that was blocking the road at 4600 South, investigators said. The man was transported to Utah Valley Regional Medical Center by LifeFlight with serious injuries.
The pursuit started at 10:22 p.m. and the motorcycle crashed at about 11:01 p.m., according to Sgt. Erik Knutzen of the Utah County Sheriff’s Office.
