SALT LAKE CITY — Two car prowlers were arrested after a K-9 unit led officers to them Tuesday, police said.

Officers first noticed two people crouched around a parked car with its dome light on near 3rd Avenue and L Street at about 3:19 a.m., according to the Salt Lake Police Department. When police returned to the area after driving around the block, investigators said the car prowlers fled.

“Containment was set up and officers, with the assistance of a K-9, tracked through the block and located them ‘sleeping’ in a yard,” according to a statement from the police department.

Samantha Cowdell, 21, and Braxton Sainsbury, 20, were arrested on suspicion of vehicle burglary and fleeing, police said. The pair burglarized several vehicles in the area, according to investigators.

Police were able to locate and recover most of the property, according to detective Cody Lougy. He said a stolen backpack was found nearby.

A Visa card that did not belong to Cowdell was found in her handbag after a search, according to the probable cause statement. She told police she did not know where the card came from, according to the document.
