LONE PEAK — A 3-year-old girl who nearly drown in a pond Tuesday returned home from the hospital Wednesday.

The girl was initially transported to the hospital in serious condition after being pulled out of Highland Glenn Pond, located in a gully behind Lone Peak High School, by her father.

The toddler’s speedy recovery was attributed to the assistance of Jeremy Barlow, a Highland City employee who was on the scene and quickly administered CPR to the girl.

“What a miracle — to have an unconscious, not-breathing 3-year-old revived and be home the next day is unbelievable,” said Joe McRae of Lone Peak Fire. “It’s great news and it was from the quick work of this Highland City employee.”

The city is working on details to recognize Barlow for his efforts, he said.

This the third near drowning in the Lone Peak Fire District in 2.5 months, according to McRae. He said all children should have a life jacket on when they are near large bodies of water. They also need to be supervised by an adult.

Problems in pools often occur when there are too many people in the water. During his almost 35 years of experience, McRae said most of the near drownings he observed occurred when a child got lost because they weren’t being properly watched by adults who were distracted.
