WEST JORDAN — A man shot by West Jordan police last week has been discharged from the hospital and booked into jail, but police aren't releasing details of what led an officer to shoot him.
Timothy James Peterson, 31, was released from the hospital Monday and booked into Salt Lake County Jail on outstanding warrants. Police declined to release information about his injuries or how many times he was shot.
"I know it's precious little, but until the investigation is completed, this is all we're releasing," said West Jordan Police Sgt. Dan Roberts.
Salt Lake County Sheriff's Sgt. Cammie Skogg said Peterson is being housed in the jail's health services unit.
An officer, who has not been identified, approached Peterson and another man just after 12:30 a.m. Thursday because he thought it was "suspicious" that they were standing outside a closed business at 7037 S. Plaza Center Drive near Jordan Landing, Roberts said.
The officer recognized Peterson as "a man who had warrants for his arrest and that he had also made threats toward police," Roberts said.
"Mr. Peterson ran away, and so the officer pursued him on foot, shots were fired, and then Mr. Peterson was taken to the hospital," he said.
Weapons were recovered from the scene, but Roberts wouldn't confirm how many or whether Peterson was armed. The department is not saying whether Peterson fired at the officer.
The man who was with Peterson at the time of the shooting is cooperating with the police investigation, Roberts said. He did not anticipate any charges against the man, and his name is not being released.
No charges have been filed against Peterson in regards to the shooting, though Roberts said some are pending.
The officer involved in the shooting remains on standard paid administrative leave pending the outcome of an investigation by the Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office.
Peterson was arrested in February for misdemeanor possession of drug paraphernalia and disorderly conduct, according to court records. A warrant was issued for his arrest July 8 for failing to show up to a mandatory court hearing in that case. He was also charged with DUI and misdemeanor drug possession in January. A warrant for missing a court hearing in that case was also issued last week.
In 2006, Peterson was found guilty in a domestic violence related incident and took a plea in abeyance, according to Utah state court records. His wife filed for divorce in 2013.
In October, Peterson took a plea in abeyance, pleading guilty to violating a protective order. His wife filed for another protective order in January and another in February, according to court records.
in 2003, Peterson was charged with six other defendants with three counts of theft and one count of burglary, all first-degree felonies. The case was eventually dismissed.
