CLINTON — SWAT teams were dispatched to a house Wednesday morning during a standoff. Nearby Voyage Academy was placed on lockdown for several hours during the incident.

Clinton Police Chief Bill Chilson said a police officer identified a man Wednesday morning who had allegedly been involved in an armed assault in Roy several days prior. The man was seen driving a stolen red car with Idaho plates around the Clinton area and was described as a black male who went by the name of "Jersey Mike," Chilson said.

Police saw the red car parked in front of a house in Clinton. Officers obtained a search warrant for the house and made a containment on the house, Chilson said. Officers confirmed at least four individuals were in the house at the time of the containment, including "Jersey Mike," Chilson said.

Officers were warned that the "Jersey Mike" was armed inside the home, so a SWAT team was dispatched to the home to extricate the men from the house.

"We made numerous attempts, time and time again to make contact with people in the house, from bull horns yelling in the house to whatever," Chilson said. "They came out for two seconds on the back and made eye contact and then turned around and went back into the house."

The SWAT team threatened to deploy a battering ram, but the men exited the home before the ram was necessary, Chilson said.

Due to the close proximity to the house, Voyage Academy was placed on lockdown for several hours during the standoff. The director of the school released a statement during the incident:

"Safety is our No. 1 priority at Voyage Academy. We are in constant communication with the Clinton City Police Department. The students, faculty, and staff of Voyage followed lockdown procedures this morning due to a safety situation down the street from our school. Our students, faculty, and staff remained locked in our school. We have been advised by the Clinton City Police Department that the situation has been resolved and the lockdown at our school has been lifted. The safety for everyone at Voyage Academy will always remain a priority at our school."

Five men were taken into custody and questioned. Chilson said police believed that two of the men were involved in the assault in Roy. The home was searched as part of the warrant.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.
