OGDEN — A judge declined to accept a settlement deal Tuesday morning for an Ogden man accused of kidnapping and sexually abusing a 14-year-old boy.
Tuesday's court date in Ogden's Second District courthouse was supposed to be a preliminary hearing for Ryan Schaffer, but it was postponed when attorneys on both sides of the case presented Judge Mark DeCaria with a settlement deal.
However, DeCaria did not accept the settlement.
DeCaria said the details of the settlement did not reflect the seriousness of the charges against Schaffer and he felt the attorneys needed to talk further before a deal with changes this drastic from the original charges could be granted. No details of the deal were released.
The 14-year-old alleged victim and his family sat in court as all of this happened. The teen claims Schaffer kidnapped him at knife point last July and held him for three days until he escaped. He said Schaffer also forced him to do sexual acts with him.
Schaffer has been charged with aggravated kidnapping and three counts of forcible sodomy.
At the last hearing for this case, the Weber County attorney's office said it was looking into the evidence and whether the 14-year-old was really kidnapped.
Several of Schaffer's family members told KSL on Tuesday the teen is lying about what happened and that there are several discrepancies in the alleged victim's story.
DeCaria said he recognized there are a lot of frayed emotions between the two families, so he set another court date for May 19 to either review another settlement deal or move forward with a preliminary hearing.
