CACHE COUNTY — A man stopped in Cache County traffic was linked to an abandoned car full of stolen items, leading to a search of his home that revealed hundreds of reported missing items, the Cache County Sheriff's Office reported.
Cache County deputies will spend days trying to find the owners of thousands of dollars worth of stolen items. Detectives believe most of the items were taken from Cache, Duchesne and Salt Lake counties.
"It's a lot of stuff," said Cache County Lt. Mike Peterson. "I don't know what the time frame is, how long that these have been happening. It's still pretty fresh as far as our investigation."
Deputies said the find started from a simple traffic stop. Peterson said Roy Meyer, 29, had some outstanding warrants, and was booked into the Cache County Jail Monday. Around the same time, they were getting reports of some cabin burglaries in the Blacksmith Fork Canyon area.
"As that was happening, we got another report of an abandoned vehicle in the town of Hyrum," Peterson said. "We were able to confirm that the vehicle in Hyrum was actually stolen."
Detectives said their investigation quickly pointed back to Meyer. Officers served a search warrant at Meyer's home in Logan Monday night. They said they found items connected to the cabin burglaries and much more.
"We have appliances, we have furniture, tools," Peterson said. "Several thousand dollars worth of stuff. It's going to take us some time to process all of that."
Peterson said Meyer had only lived in the area for eight days. Several neighbors said they had seen a large moving truck in front of Meyer's mobile home for several days, until it was unloaded recently. Peterson said he's not sure if Meyer had help, but detectives are interviewing a woman who was living with him.
