SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County leaders have passed a resolution to make Emigration Canyon safer for cyclists and residents.
"(It is) some of the greatest cycling accessible from the Salt Lake Valley," cyclist Eddie Barber said. "One day last year, we were up here and could estimate 400 or 500 cyclists. It wasn't an event. It was a Saturday."
The resolution, passed unanimously Tuesday morning, creates a committee made up of Emigration Canyon residents and cyclists. The groups will work together to make recommendations for improvements to the county.
"It's a relief to me," Community Council Chairman Ricky Raile said. "It's a win-win for the bicycle community and for residents, so I'm very happy with it."
Ideally, recommendations passed on from the committee would get more attention, since both sides have already agreed on them.
Future improvements could include larger bike lanes, and the clearing of boulders and debris in the area.
"For this resolution to pass, we're all safer," said Phil Sarnoff, Bike Utah executive director.
