TAYLORSVILLE — Police shut down 5400 South for several hours Saturday night following an accident that killed a 3-year-old boy.

Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal said it appeared alcohol was a factor in the crash.

"This is the tragedy," he said. "We actually had witnesses in the process of calling 911 (when the crash occurred)."

A 55-year-old man driving a Dodge Ram truck west on 5400 South was traveling at a high rate of speed and veering all over the roadway before he hit a Subaru near 1300 West just before 9 p.m., Hoyal said. This caused a "chain reaction crash" involving five vehicles as the Subaru was pushed into other vehicles stopped at 1300 West.

The 3-year-old child, who was in a child restraint seat, was killed.

Two others were injured in the crash. Hoyal said one individual sustained serious injuries while the other was in fair condition. Both were transported to Intermountain Medical Center for treatment.

The driver of the truck exited the vehicle and tried to blend in with the crowd, but a citizen grabbed him and held him until officers arrived, Hoyal said. There were a number of witnesses and passersby who stopped to aid those involved in the accident.

The man was taken into custody. No names were released Saturday night.
