SALT LAKE CITY — A would-be restaurant patron is recovering in the hospital after falling into a 10-foot deep trench Sunday afternoon. Emergency crews pulled the man from the ditch.
Salt Lake City Fire Department spokesman Jasen Asay said crews responded to a call of a man trapped in a trench at 140 North 900 West. Emergency personnel found the man in the trench just outside of the East Sea restaurant where he was going for a takeout order. Officials said the hole was covered with plywood, which gave way as the man walked across the boards.
When the plywood collapsed, the man fell into the ditch, suffering what was believed to be a severe leg injury. The injury prevented the man from being able to pull himself out, Asay said. The man called out to passers-by who heard him and called for help, he explained.
“It was 20-degrees outside,” Asay said. “He was waist-deep in water and was probably in the trench for about 30 minutes before we were able to get him out.”
The victim — believed to be in his 50’s — was transported to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, Asay said.
