SALT LAKE COUNTY — Search and rescue crews are urging hikers to use caution and change their mindset with the changing weather this week.

Crews rescued eight people over the weekend -- most recently early Monday morning.

A 17-year-old boy began hiking Squaw Peak Sunday but winds shifted and the night sky settled in. Officials said when the teen realized it was getting dark and late he decided to turn around but then got lost.

"He tried a short cut to come back over the front and got cliffed out," said Cap. Dean York of the Provo Fire Department.

The teen was able to call for help and a 12-member team rescued him early Monday morning.

"Other than being cold from a little rain, it was successful," York said.

The boy was one of eight people rescued this weekend. No one was seriously injured.

Sunshine and relatively warm temperatures that draw people outdoors are expected to change this week.

"We'll start to get that fall feel," said KSL Meteorologist Grant Weyman.

He said the biggest issue for Monday will be wind. Rain and possible snow on the benches are forecast for later in the week.

The way people approach outdoor activities may need to change, Weyman said.

"People need to remember things like, don't forget the jacket," he said.
