SALT LAKE CITY (AP) - Animal rights activists are urging officials to revoke the license of a carriage company whose horse died after a high-profile collapse in Salt Lake City.

Officials with the People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals filed a complaint Wednesday, saying Carriage for Hire didn't properly report to Salt Lake County Animal Services about five traffic accidents involving horse-drawn carriages.

The group is asking Animal Services to investigate what it calls a "pattern of noncompliance" and recommend the city revoke the company's license.

"In addition to forcing horses to pull heavy loads through the streets of Salt Lake City, Carriage for Hire also seems to be playing fast and loose with city law," said PETA spokesperson and Salt Lake City resident Jeremy Beckham in a statement released by PETA. "If the company failed to report five accidents in clear violation of the law, there's really no choice: its license must be revoked."

Neither Animal Services chief Don Porter nor representatives from Carriage for Hire immediately responded to phone messages left Wednesday morning.

The company has come under increased scrutiny from PETA after a horse named Jerry collapsed on the job in August and later died, apparently from colic.
