MAGNA — Fire investigators are working to completely put out a business fire in Magna and figure what caused the blaze that destroyed several sheds. Just after 7 a.m. Wednesday, fire crews were called to Bocce Welding and Repair near 2290 South and 7200 West to find a major pallet fire.
The 21st South freeway in Magna reopened after being closed Wednesday morning due to a two-alarm fire nearby. Crews responded around 7:10 a.m., according to Battalion Chief Brian Anderton with the Unified Fire Authority.
Firefighters arrived and called a second alarm, shut the road and ran fire hoses across it.
"Their biggest challenge was protecting the main body of the business," Anderton said.
He said a couple of outbuildings burned but the main building did not. It still took a while for them to put out the fire.
"They were able to quickly knock down the main body, but because of the deep-seeded fire, (it) prolonged operations," Abderton said.
The business owner was called out and Abderton says the owner has no idea what happened. They are still looking to determine the cause of the fire.
"(The owner) is working with our investigators as they work to determine the cause," he said.
There were no employees present during the fire and no one else was in the area.
"Our investigators are waiting to get in and really start digging in," Abderton said.
Abderton says the biggest challenge was the lack of water supply in the area.
"Our crews had to bring a couple of lines over 1000 feet which is not typical, but our crews do train for such events," he said.
The lines had to go across a major commuting road during rush hour. Westbound state Route 201 was closed at 5600 West and the eastbound lanes were closed at 7800 West. All lanes reopened before 10 a.m.
