PROVO (AP) — A new Utah County breast milk bank is taking in far more donations than officials expected.
The Utah County Health Department says the bank in Provo, which opened in July, has taken in more than 1,000 ounces in two weeks.
Health coordinator Amanda Ottley tells the Daily Herald that the bank's goal was 10,000 ounces in a year and center is on its way to meeting donations.
The milk is frozen and sent to Colorado for pasteurization, and then used by hospitals in Utah, Colorado, Idaho and Nevada.
Officials say the milk is cheaper for hospitals than baby formula.
