ROY — Roy City Police Chief Greg Whinham publicly announced his resignation Wednesday.

Whinham, 55, had been on paid administrative leave since at least the beginning of the month pending an undisclosed investigation.

Roy City Manager Chris Davis said Whinham voluntarily resigned, submitting a letter of resignation to the mayor's office Tuesday night. Davis would not comment on whether anyone tried to talk him out of resigning.

While Davis also would not comment on the reasons for the chief's resignation, he said there was no pending criminal investigation against Whinham.

The city announced that Deputy Chief Mike Elliott will serve as the acting chief until a new one is hired.

Whinham, a graduate of Roy High School, has been with the department for nearly three decades. He was appointed chief in 2001.

"He loves Roy City. He loves the Roy Police Department," Davis said.

Additional information will be posted as it becomes available.
