SALT LAKE CITY — Father's Day is upon us, and I've been stressing out about what to get my dad. The man is in his mid-60's and has pretty much everything he wants.
I was at a loss until I watched this video and realized, all any dad really wants for Father's Day is to be with his family. Well, that and a new set of golf clubs.
This short, two-and-a-half minute video helped me realize two things: I want to be a better dad, and I need to tell my dad "thank you."
Dads have a way of being a huge influence on your life in the subtlest of ways.
At the time I didn't realize it, but leaving work early to make it to my baseball games wasn't easy for my dad, but he did it. I know he didn't enjoy stopping every 20 minutes on our car ride to Washington when I was 6 so I could go to the bathroom, but he did, and he held my hand in the parking lot and smiled as he helped me wash my hands.
Dads are the manliest men in the world, because they know when to take off the tool belt so they can put on a tutu, or they make sure to turn off the football game so they can watch you play soccer even though he may have no idea what a striker is.
Making my father proud has always been a priority of mine, but it wasn't until I was no longer a child, but a man, that I realized his proudest moments were not when I hit a grand slam, won a state championship or even when I worked for a prestigious news station in New York City. His proudest moments are when I hold my own children when they're scared, when I tell my wife she is beautiful, and when I close my computer so I can put on a princess crown and dance with my daughter.
Being a father is not always easy, but it's always worth it.
Let's make sure to tell the dads in our lives, whether it's a brother, a grandfather, a father-in-law, a neighbor, a friend or an actual father, thank you. These men do not seek recognition or accolades, but they deserve them.
With that said, I would like to quickly thank my father, Craig, and my father-in-law, Curtis. Thank you for being the types of fathers I hope to become some day.
