NORTH SALT LAKE — A Bountiful man was killed in an accident on I-215 Monday.
Berton Stephens, 54, was pronounced dead at the scene after he collided with two other drivers just before 5:30 p.m. Utah Highway Patrol investigators said there was no evidence that Stephens braked and they are investigating a medical condition as a potential cause of the accident.
Stephens was northbound on I-215 when his vehicle rear-ended a car driven by Nathan Monson, 33, of Woods Cross. Monson did not sustain any injuries.
The collision occurred just before the Legacy Highway split. Stephens passed Monson after hitting him and sideswiped the barrier where I-215 curves east and crossed the median, witnesses told police. Stephens went up a large embankment, crossed the westbound I-215 lanes and entered the westbound I-215 onramp from Redwood Road.
Juan Garcia, 46, of West Valley City, was driving an SUV and was entering the freeway when he was hit, according to the UHP. Garcia's car rolled off the right of the road, down an embankment, through a fence and landed on a bike path.
Garcia was transported to the Salt Lake City hospital in critical condition.
Police were unsure whether Garcia was wearing a seat belt.
