SALT LAKE CITY — Summer is almost in full swing, and with it comes barbecuing, outdoor festivals and swimming. There are several opportunities to take advantage of the warm weather coming up this weekend — Here is a list of five of those events:

Pasifikas Festival

The third annual Pasifikas Festival is a three-day event to celebrate and highlight Polynesian culture through song, dance, food and crafts. Several island cultures will be represented during the festival including Fiji, Tonga, Samoa, Tahiti and New Zealand.

The festival will take place Friday from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m., Saturday from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday from 7 to 9 p.m. The activities will be in downtown Provo at 100 East Center and University Avenue.

Utah Tree Climbing Championship

Yes, this event is going to be as cool as it sounds. First of all, who even knew that tree climbing was an actual sport? And second, how did the national championship end up in Salt Lake City? Either way, this event will be awesome and I'm sure quite entertaining for the masses. Although if you have small children you will probably need to use the disclaimer of "Do not try this at home."

The 19th annual Utah Tree Climbing Championship began Thursday and will run until Sunday, May 18. The tree climbing will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day and will be held rain or shine at Pioneer Park at 300 W. 400 South in Salt Lake City.

Desert Thunder Car Races

I am under the firm belief that everyone should attend a car race at least once in their lifetime. Although, I will advise that participants should bring ear plugs.

The Desert Thunder Raceway in Price sponsors a few stock car races during the summer and a race will be held Friday and Saturday. The gates open at 5 p.m. and races begin at 7 p.m.

Color Palooza 5K

If you missed the Spanish Fork and Salt Lake City Color Festivals, you have another chance. St. George will host a 5K charity run including a chalk throwing. All the money earned at the race and palooza will go to local hospitals, schools, and charities.

The Color Palooza will be Saturday from 9 a.m. to 12 p.m. at the Hansen Stadium at 225 S. 700 East.

Golden Gloves Nationals

The Golden Gloves tournament first began in 1923, and has been providing people with entertainment ever since. If you are in the mood for an intense evening, swing by the Utah Golden Gloves at the Salt Palace.

The boxing championships have run since May 11 and will end Saturday.

Do you know of anything else going on this weekend that we missed? Have you attended any of the listed events in the past? Let us know on the comment boards or email me.
