MARSHFIELD, Wisconson — Prom is always a big deal, and having just the right dress is a big part of many young women's experience. When 17-year-old Mariah Herron just couldn't find the right one, she went to her father to express her disappointment. He responded by making a dress himself.

"I jokingly asked my dad if he could make me a prom dress. When he said yes, I was surprised," Herron told the Green Bay Press Gazette.

Father David Herron learned to sew a little in the military in order to mend clothes and put on stripes, but he was by no means an expert. But the dress he produced — with a lot of work and a little help from the employees of a local fabric story — turned out to be quite beautiful.

Mariah wanted a dress that spoke to her love of hunting and had been looking for something that had the feel and color of camouflage. Her father managed to produce just what she was looking for: a camo-themed dress with a white backing and lots of black lace.

Mariah and the community were astounded.

"My dad is pretty good at making things, but making a dress — that's different," she said.

According to the Press Gazette, the living room of the Herron home became the hub of the operation with a loving father studying the pattern for the dress, fabric everywhere and a sewing machine chugging away.

All in all, it was a success. Mariah was happy with the result and that he could be recruited to make more dresses for her.

"I think she likes it," her father said. "She asked me if I'd make her wedding dress."
