WEST VALLEY CITY — Good Samaritans tackled an alleged car thief and pinned him until police arrived.

Sandy police officers tried to pull over a van for a traffic violation around 8 p.m. Sunday.

The driver sped off, and police did not chase the van. Investigators say the driver threw meth out the window, and police learned the van was stolen.

An hour later witnessed spotted the same van speeding on 3500 South at about 6400 West. The van ran a red light and another car T-boned the vehicle. The van rolled and the driver tried to flee, but a group of people in the area tackled him to the ground. They held him until police arrived.

Police say the driver, Cody Campbell, 22, was taken to a hospital to be treated for minor injuries related to the crash. He is suspected of DUI and will be booked into the Salt Lake County Jail.
