SALT LAKE CITY — Young drivers with new drivers licenses took a course Saturday to learn how to avoid accidents.
The "Teen Driving Challenge" is a program hosted by the Utah Highway Patrol that puts drivers through exercises that teach them not just how to drive, but to avoid accidents and drive safer.
The class covers evasive maneuvers, a, high speed braking, and serpentine backing. Drivers' skills are tested on a timed distracted driving course.
According to a Children's Hospital of Philadelphia report, 75 percent of all teen-involved crashes are the teen's fault. In Utah, teen drivers were involved in 20 percent of all crashes during 2011, UHP said.
The classes will be held Saturdays in April and May.
Class dates and the schools scheduled to attend are as follows: April 20 at Price High School; May 4 at North Sevier High; May 11 will be a class for Davis and Utah county schools.
