MIDVALE — Two Midvale schools were placed in lockdown for a time Thursday due to a SWAT situation.

Officers from the Unified Police Department were attempting to serve a warrant at about 8000 South and 500 West when a man barricaded himself inside his house.

Canyons School District posted on Facebook that both Midvale Elementary School and Midvale Junior High School have been placed in lockdown "at the request of police."

"All students at the school are safe. As more information becomes available, we will let parents know," the post said. "We ask that parents do not come to the school to either drop off or collect your children until further notice."

Nearby, Unified police were attempting to question a man about a recent vehicle burglary. The man also had several outstanding warrants, said Unified Police Lt. Justin Hoyal.

A person answered the door at the house at about 10:30 a.m. and told officers the 28-year-old man they were looking for was in a back bedroom.

Morgan Winger has a long criminal history in Utah dating back to 2003.

But when officers got to the room, they found it was closed and barricaded. The man inside said "he had a gun and wasn't coming out," according to Hoyal.

The officers backed out of the house and called a SWAT team. By 11:45 a.m., the man came out of the house without further incident and surrendered.

Morgan Winger has a long criminal history in Utah dating back to 2003, according to state court records. Most recently, he was convicted of felony forgery in 2012 and had a warrant out for his arrest for violating probation. He was convicted of felony drug possession in 2011 and also had a warrant out for his arrest for probation violations on that case, according to Utah State Court records.
