WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. — A North Carolina police officer is being praised after a photo of him helping a woman and child in the rain went viral.
Officer Charles Ziglar with the Winston-Salem Police Department was at an area church when he noticed a mother and child walking down the street in the rain.
He stopped to offer the mother and her child a ride to their destination, helping them into his patrol car and putting the child's stroller in his trunk.
Ziglar told WXII he didn't deserve any extra attention for his deed.
"This is an everyday thing that we do," he said. "It's not just me and some kind of random occurrence. "It's pretty simple. It's doing the right thing."
Ziglar said he sees the woman and her child nearly every day and didn't want them out in the cold.
Facebook comments on the picture show viewers' gratitude for Ziglar's actions. "I'm fairly new to Winston Salem and have witnessed many acts of serving the public from the police department here," said Dorothy Banks. "Trust me, you don't see that everywhere."
Acts of kindness by police officers nationwide have gotten attention in recent months as bystanders have shared their stories on the Internet. In November, an officer with the New York Police Department was catapulted into the national spotlight after a tourist snapped a picture of him giving a pair of boots to a homeless man.
In December, a Texas police officer pulled over a man who could not afford to renew his vehicle's registration. The officer returned the ticket with a $100 bill.
