SALT LAKE CITY — In conjunction with the construction of the city's new Public Safety Building, 300 East will be temporarily closed between 400 and 500 South beginning Friday until May 29.

The new Public Safety Building is a $125 million project that will house Salt Lake City police and fire departments. The current building will undergo major renovations during the road closures.

"We're repaving the entire street," said project manager for Moca Systems Chad Jones. "We're adding landscaping, we're adding concrete. It's a big project. We're really tied to balance for the public, an extension of the campus and a public space, but also a nice home for the police and fire."

After the construction project, 300 East will be narrowed down to one lane in each direction. The center of the street will contain bike lanes, artwork and landscaping.

"We're trying to create a new space that's more geared for festivals and events that expand onto Library Square and our new Plaza, make it a nice open public space," Jones said.

The construction for 300 East and the new public safety building will both be completed May 29. Jones is confident that residents and nearby businesses will love the renovations.

"It takes a little time and maybe a little inconvenience for people, but I think the benefit we're going to get out of it will definitely be worth it," he said.

As a separate road closure, part of I-80 will be closed Friday night at 10 p.m. until 7 a.m. Saturday morning. The road will be closed from the section of I-80 in Parley's Canyon from east of the I-215 junction to the Quarry Exit.
