SALT LAKE CITY — Transportation Security Administration discovered two passengers with large knives at the Salt Lake City International Airport on Thursday.

One passenger headed to Philadelphia had a plastic knife hanging around his neck with fishing line when he attempted to go through the security checkpoint. The knife was hidden under his clothing, but officers found it after he was screened by the imaging body scanner.

The passenger stated that he carried the knife for "protection."

The second passenger was traveling to Los Angeles and brought a double-edge knife in his carry-on bag. The Salt Lake City Airport police gave him a citation on a state charge.

TSA said passengers need to be aware of what items are prohibited in airports and while flying. Passengers are prohibited from traveling with sharp objects and guns in carry-on baggage or on themselves. However, many of those items are allowed in checked baggage.

Prohibited Items
  • Sharp Objects
  • Sporting Goods
  • Guns & Firearms
  • Tools
  • Martial Arts & Self Defense Items
  • Explosive & Flammable Materials
  • Disabling Chemicals & Other Dangerous Items

TSA has provided multiple resources for passengers to help them determine whether an item is permitted in carry-on baggage, checked baggage or not at all.

For more information, visit www.tsa.gov or use TSA's mobile app — myTSA. The app allows a traveler to enter the name of an item and the app will provide information on how to transport that item on board an aircraft.
