LOS ANGELES — The director of the latest "Star Trek" movie is set to try his hand at a different universe, according to reports: "Star Wars."

Despite saying a few weeks ago that he wasn't interested in directing a "Star Wars" movie, the director of "Star Trek Into Darkness" will reportedly be at the helm of "Episode VII," according to multiplereports.

An official announcement is supposed to come later Thursday, according to The New York Times.

"Episode VII" is due out in 2015, according to Disney, which purchased "Star Wars" maker Lucasfilm for more than $4 billion in December.

Lucasfilm chief Kathleen Kennedy actively sought after Abrams for the director role, according to The Wrap.

Abrams is the creator or co-creator of "Felicity," "Alias," "Lost," "Fringe" and "Undercovers." He has directed films including "Mission: Impossible III," "Star Trek" and "Super 8."

"Star Trek Into Darkness," Abrams' current film, is due out in May.
