WEST VALLEY CITY — Granite School District has named its new STEM school Neil Armstrong Academy after the late, famous astronaut. The name was decided upon by the Granite Board of Education during its January board meeting.

The school, which will serve pre-K through sixth-grade students, is being built at 5194 W. Highbury Parkway. The school will open its doors for the 2013-14 school year.

STEM stands for science, technology, engineering and mathematics, and such schools focus on those subjects.

“Neil Armstrong and those involved with the Apollo missions are powerful models of a STEM approach to learning,” said Principal Tyler Howe. “They drew upon a vast array of fields as a means to a tremendous end goal — putting a man on the moon.”

Armstrong was the first person to walk on the moon as part of NASA's Apollo 11 mission in 1969. He died in August at the age of 82.
