SALT LAKE CITY — Utah Transit Authority stopped a train at Salt Lake Central station after the front cabin filled with smoke.

About 7:26 p.m. Saturday, UTA reported, a northbound FrontRunner train was stopped about four miles south of the station after the conductor noticed smoke filling the locomotive cabin.

The conductor got out of the cabin and stepped onto the tracks, waiting for the smoke to clear. He then drove the train to the Salt Lake Central station, where passengers were evacuated.

According to UTA Spokesperson Gerry Carpenter, there was no sign of flame and the damage was minor. It is unknown what caused the smoke. UTA returned the train to the train yard, where they are looking into the cause.

No smoke reached the passenger cars.

Passengers were transferred to another train about later. UTA reported significant delays in FrontRunner service and expected residual delays throughout the evening.
