PLANO, Texas — A traffic stop in Plano ended in a surprise for a Texas man.
When Hayden Carlo was pulled over in Plano, in northern Texas, for expired registration, he told the officer he could not afford to pay the registration fee because times were tough.
"I said ‘there's no explanation for why I haven't done it, except I don't have the money.' I said ‘it was either feed my kids or get my registration done,'" he told KTVT-TV.
Carlo said the officer handed him a citation, but inside was a $100 bill.
"I broke down in my car; what else could I do?" he said.
The officer did not tell anyone about the gift, but Billy McIntire, Carlo's grandfather, wrote a letter to the police department about the officer's actions.
"I get emotional when we talk about this type of thing," he said. "You just don't find that many officers who would do this type of thing."

"He helped me out when I needed it, and I appreciate that. I'll never forget the man. It definitely restored my faith in God," Carlo said.
The Plano Police Department highlighted the "random act of kindness by one of our officers" on their Facebook page, but the officer did not wish to be identified. Police said they will honor him in within the department.
The officer is not the first to get national attention in recent months for an act of kindness to a stranger. An photo went viral last month of an NYPD officer giving a pair of boots to a homeless man. A woman visiting New York City snapped a picture of the interaction and sent it to the police department, who then shared it on Facebook.
