SALT LAKE CITY — Salt Lake County is starting a crosswalk flag pilot program to make crossing the street safer, and they are looking for sponsors.

The success of reflective orange flags placed at crosswalks around Salt Lake City to help drivers spot pedestrians has Salt Lake County looking to do something similar. Funds for the county's Pilot Crosswalk Flag Program are limited, however, so the county has created an "adopt-a-crosswalk" program for those who want to make crosswalks safer.

Salt Lake County is looking for schools, PTA groups, businesses or individuals to adopt crosswalks throughout unincorporated areas.

Currently, the pilot program has put flags near schools along 2300 East and some others on 3900 South. But the county is now accepting requests for flags at other crosswalks.

Those who adopt a crosswalk will be responsible for maintaining and replacing the flags. Schools that sponsor crosswalks may have flag costs waived upon request.
