CLEARFIELD — One Clearfield family is having a particularly hard time this holiday season, but thanks to some good Samaritans, they now have a lot more to be thankful for.

The last few months have been expensive for the Thomas family. In the beginning of October, their furnace went out. Then a pipe broke, and their car needed a new transmission. But then, the Thomas' received the worst news of all when they discovered a devastating diagnosis for their 6-year-old son, Ryan.

"We found out that he had a mass," said Crystal Thomas, Ryan's mother. "We had a biopsy on it and the following Monday we found out he had Ewings Sarcoma."

Minor back pain turned out to be an extremely rare form of cancer.

"That was the hardest," Crystal said. "I'm still in shock that he has cancer. That's not something you would expect."

With the days and night getting much colder, and Ryan's chemotherapy getting harder, the lack of heat became a real problem for the family. The Thomas' also recently discovered that the broken heater was leaking carbon monoxide.

Friends decided to spread the word about the families need and one local business stepped up to help.

"We can't fix transmissions, we can't fix cancer, but we can fix heat," said Action Plumbing and Heating employee, Nate Dipalma.

Action Plumbing and Heating surprised the family with the news of a brand new furnace free of charge.

"This is going to help immensely," Crystal said. "Words can't describe the thanks that I have right now."
