SALT LAKE CITY — A Murray man is facing burglary charges after police say he took the pins off a soldier's uniform.
Donald Lee Whytock, 60, is charged with burglary, a third-degree felony, and theft, a class B misdemeanor, according to documents filed Thursday in 3rd District Court.
The soldier told police he left his uniform in a motel room at 315 W. 330 South when he went to dinner. When he returned, the uniform had been moved and several military pins and awards were missing. The monetary value of the pins was less than $500, charging documents state.
The incident was reported to police by a woman who said she entered the hotel room with Whytock, believing it was being used by a friend of his, charges state. She said she became skeptical when Whytock couldn't explain to whom the uniform belonged.
Upon questioning by police, Whytock admitted he had been to the motel before and knew the door the room he had entered had a bad lock, according to the charges. Whytock told police he intended to sell the pins, charges state.
Whytock was booked into Salt Lake County Jail with bail set at $10,000.
