SUGAR HOUSE — Part of a major Salt Lake street will be shut down this weekend as visible work on the Sugar House streetcar project begins.

If your weekend plans had you going to Sugarhouse Barbecue, Dees or DI, you should still have access, but through traffic on 700 East will be detoured around a two-block section at 2100 South.

UTA spokesman Gerry Carpenter said the detour will be in place from around 8 p.m. Friday until 5 o'clock Monday morning.

"By closing the street down for one weekend, we are hoping to get the work done and have a shorter impact on commuters," he said.

Carpenter explained the streetcar will cross 700 East.

"We've been working on the crossings all this summer, and this is one of the last big ones to do," he said. "We still have to do State Street and Main Street, but those will be done next year."

The $55 million project will link Sugar House via a 2-mile line with the main north-south TRAX line and mixed use development, which is planned at each of seven stops.
