That Mikaela Shiffrin would earn two medals at the Pyeongchang Olympics was not all that surprising. That neither would come in the slalom, a race she won at the 2014 Games and has ruled for five years? Now that part was a surprise.

The U.S. Olympic team will leave Pyeongchang with its lowest medal haul in 20 years — a number even worse than it looks because of all the new, American-friendly sports that have been added to the program over the past two decades.

Canadian skicross competitor Dave Duncan has apologized for "poor judgment" for his role in taking a car after a night out at a bar and using it for a ride home to the Olympic athletes village. The group was stopped by police shortly after midnight Saturday near the village.

The International Olympic Committee on Sunday upheld the ban of Russia from the Pyeongchang Winter Games because of doping, denying the 168 athletes competing here as "Olympic Athletes from Russia" the right to march in the closing ceremony under their country's flag.
The U.S. president's daughter and adviser said Sunday that her visit to the Olympics was "so incredibly inspiring" and expressed gratitude at the chance to watch competition and — in a subtle nod to Korean Peninsula politics — "be here with our allies in South Korea."

They've had their moment on prime-time TV, the skiers and skaters who dazzled or flopped in the Winter Olympics. But fame can be fleeting, and a lot of Olympians are quickly forgotten as we concentrate on other sports in the four years between games.
