Tigers tame Tide...Gophers hold off Nittany Lions

UNDATED (AP) _ Top-ranked LSU remains perfect this season after winning a 1-2 matchup that lived up to the hype.

Joe Burrow passed for 393 yards and three touchdowns as the Tigers beat No. 2 Alabama for the first time in nine tries, 46-41. Burrow completed 31 of 39 passes and ran for 64 yards in boosting his bid for a Heisman Trophy.

Clyde Edwards-Helaire ran for three touchdowns and caught a scoring pass. He burst down the right side for a seven-yard scoring run, slamming past two Tide defenders to give LSU a 46-34 lead. The touchdown became important when Tua Tagavailoa (TOO’-ah tuhng-ah-vy-LOH’) heaved an 85-yard scoring pass to DeVonta Smith with 1:21 left on the Crimson Tide’s first play of their final drive.

Alabama rallied from a 33-13 halftime deficit to three times to pull within a touchdown in the fourth quarter. But Burrow kept the Tigers in front as they improved to 9-0 while the Tide fell to 8-1 with their first home loss in four years.

Tagovailoa was 21 of 40 for 418 yards and four touchdowns with an interception and a fumble.

Meanwhile, 13th-ranked Minnesota now has the inside track for its first trip to the Big Ten championship game after beating a top-5 opponent for the first time in 20 years.

Tanner Morgan passed for 339 yards and three touchdowns as the Gophers knocked off fifth-ranked Penn State, 31-26. Rashod Bateman got the Gophers going with a 66-yard score on their first possession and finished with seven catches for 203 yards, the second-most in program history. Tyler Johnson had seven receptions for 104 yards and a touchdown as Minnesota improved to 9-0 overall and 6-0 in the conference.

Jordan Howden picked off Sean Clifford in the end zone with 1:01 left to secure the victory and drop the Nittany Lions to 8-1.

Clifford was 23 of 43 for 340 yards and a score, but he was picked off three times after throwing just three interceptions in Penn State’s first eight games.

In Saturday’s other top-25 action:

_ Justin Fields threw for three touchdowns and ran for another in the first half as third-ranked Ohio State blew away Maryland, 73-14. J.K. Dobbins rushed for 90 yards and two touchdowns as the 9-0 Buckeyes built a 42-0 halftime lead. The top team in the CFP rankings hardly missed suspended defensive star Chase Young as it held the Terrapins to 139 yards for the game, most of it coming in the fourth quarter.

_ Tenth-ranked Florida crushed Vanderbilt, 56-0 as Kyle Trask threw for a career-high 363 yards and three touchdowns in the best performance by a Gators quarterback since Tim Tebow’s (TEE’-bohz) college finale. Trask threw for two TDs and Jon Greenard returned a fumble 80 yards for a score while the Gators were outscoring the Commodores 28-0 in the third quarter.

_ Baylor improved to 9-0 as Denzel Mims made a leaping 4-yard touchdown catch in the third overtime to help the No. 11 Bears get a 29-23 victory against TCU. Baylor clinched the win on Grayland Arnold's game-ending interception of Max Duggan's fourth-down pass in the end zone.

_ Jonathan Taylor rushed for a season-high 250 yards and Danny Davis scored two touchdowns as No. 16 Wisconsin held off Iowa, 24-22. Quintez Cephus caught five passes for 94 yards and a score to help the Badgers stay in contention for the Big Ten West crown.

_ Cincinnati rolled to a 48-3 rout of Connecticut as Desmond Ridder threw for a pair of touchdowns and Michael Warren II ran for two more. Ridder went 13 of 23 for 136 yards and ran seven times for 94 yards before coming out in the third quarter with the 17th-ranked Bearcats in control.

_ Texas pulled out a 27-24 victory over No. 20 Kansas State on Cameron Dicker’s 26-yard field goal as time expired. Keaontay Ingram rushed for 139 yards and two second-half touchdowns before Dicker drilled his second game-ending field goal of the season.

_ Hendon Hooker accounted for 311 yards of total offense and ran for a touchdown to help Virginia Tech beat No. 22 Wake Forest, 36-17.

_ Shane Buechele (boo-SHEHL’) threw three of his five touchdown passes to Kylen Granson and finished with 414 yards through the air as No. 24 SMU outscored East Carolina, 59-51.

NBA-SCHEDULE

Celtics win 7th straight but lose Hayward

SAN ANTONIO (AP) _ The Boston Celtics extended their winning streak but lost a key player in the process.

Gordon Hayward broke his left hand late in the first half of the Celtics’ 135-115 rout of the Spurs in San Antonio. Hayward collided with Spurs forward LaMarcus Aldridge with just over a minute remaining in the first half.

There was no immediately timetable for Hayward’s recovery.

Jaylen Brown dropped in 30 points and Kemba Walker added 26 in the Celtics’ seventh straight victory since a season-opening loss to Philadelphia.

DeMar DeRozan had 22 points for the Spurs.

NBA-RAPTORS-INJURIES

Raptors lose Lowry, Ibaka to injuries

NEW ORLEANS (AP) — The Toronto Raptors say starting point guard Kyle Lowry fractured his left thumb Friday night against the New Orleans Pelicans, and sixth-man Serge Ibaka (ih-BAH'-kah) suffered a severe ankle sprain.

Lowry said he was hurt in the first quarter when he tried to swipe the ball away from Pelicans center Derrick Favors on an offensive rebound. Lowry went to the bench but returned a couple minutes later. Ibaka was in a walking boot after the game.

T25 MEN’S BASKETBALL

Pirates lose Powell in win over Stony Brook

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. (AP) _ No. 12 Seton Hall welcomed back its men’s basketball coach, but the Pirates face the prospect of spending a few games without their top player.

Big East preseason player of the year Myles Powell suffered a sprained left ankle five minutes into the Pirates’ 74-57 win over Stony Brook. Head coach Kevin Willard says Powell’s injury could lead to a prolonged absence.

Willard was back on the sideline after sitting out two games while the NCAA continued an investigation into the basketball program.

Romaro Gill had 10 points and 10 assists for Seton Hall, while Quincy McKnight added 14 points.

NHL-SCHEDULE

Lightning sweep Sabres in Sweden

UNDATED (AP) _ The Tampa Bay Lightning are coming home after sweeping their two games against the Buffalo Sabres in Stockholm.

Pat Maroon scored twice and Swedish native Victor Hedman also tallied as the Bolts dumped the Sabres, 5-3. Hedman put the Lightning ahead, 2-1 with a power-play goal 1:58 into the second period.

Sam Reinhart had a goal and an assist after scoring twice for the Sabres in Friday’s 3-2 loss to Tampa Bay.

Buffalo is 0-4-1 since a 9-2-1 start.

Elsewhere on NHL ice:

_ The Islanders are 11-0-1 in their last 12 games after Scott Mayfield’s third-period goal gave them a 2-1 victory over the Panthers. Mat Barzal had a goal and an assist to back Thomas Greiss (grys), who turned back 37 shots in his sixth consecutive win.

NFL-NEWS

Brissett ruled out

UNDATED (AP) _ The Indianapolis Colts have ruled out starting quarterback Jacoby Brissett (brih-SEHT') for Sunday's game against Miami.

Backup Brian Hoyer will make his first start with the Colts.

Brissett suffered a sprained medial collateral ligament in his left knee during last weekend's loss at Pittsburgh. He did limited work in practice this week.

Also in the NFL:

_ 49ers tight end George Kittle is doubtful to play Monday night against Seattle due to knee and ankle injuries that prevented him from practicing this week.

_ The Raiders have placed safety Karl Joseph on injured reserve with a foot injury suffered while making a game-clinching interception in the final minute of Thursday night’s 26-24 win over the Chargers.

_ The Falcons have placed No. 2 running back Ito Smith on injured reserve with a neck injury.

NASCAR-PHOENIX QUALIFYING

Kyle Busch wins pole for playoff race at Phoenix

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) _ Kyle Busch won the pole and all eight title contenders qualified in the top 10 for the final race to decide the NASCAR Cup championship field.

Busch turned a lap in Saturday qualifying at 140.116 mph at ISM Raceway outside of Phoenix. It puts him one spot ahead of reigning NASCAR champion Joey Logano on the starting grid.

Busch and Logano are the two drivers above the cutline to earn berths in next week's championship field. Ryan Blaney was the lowest qualifying playoff driver at 10th.

NASCAR-WALLACE FINED

Wallace fined $50,000 for intentional spin

AVONDALE, Ariz. (AP) — Bubba Wallace has been fined $50,000 by NASCAR for causing a caution last week at Texas that affected the race for at least one playoff driver.

Wallace was also docked 50 points in the driver standings.

His spin in last Sunday's race was criticized by Kyle Larson as intentional and it brought out a caution for Wallace.

PGA TOUR CHAMPIONS

Maggert maintains Schwab lead

PHOENIX (AP) _ Jeff Maggert has kept the lead in the Charles Schwab Cup Championship with a 2-under 69 in the third round.

Maggert is 16 under for the tournament, one shot ahead of Miguel Angel Jimenez. Maggert He has led all three days, opening with rounds of 63 and 65.

Jimenez birdied the final two holes Saturday for a 63.

LPGA JAPAN CLASSIC

Suzuki leads LPGA's Japan Classic

SHIGA, Japan (AP) _ Local favorite Ai Suzuki shot a bogey-free 7-under 65 to take a three-stroke lead after the second round of the LPGA Japan Classic.

Suzuki had seven birdies at the par-72 Seta Golf Course to finish her two rounds at 12-under 132. Gaby Lopez shot 67 and was in second place in the final event of the LPGA Tour's Asia Swing.

WOMEN’S SOCCER-EQUAL PAY

Judge grants USWNT class status in suit

LOS ANGELES (AP) — The U.S. women's national team has been granted class status in its lawsuit against U.S. Soccer that alleges gender discrimination in compensation and working conditions.

A court ruling Friday in Los Angeles expands the case beyond the 28 players who originally brought the lawsuit to include all players who had been called up to camp or played in a game over a multiyear period. U.S. Soccer had opposed the move to certify the class.

The suit filed against U.S. Soccer in March alleging institutionalized gender discrimination that includes inequitable compensation between the men's and women's teams. A May 5 trial date has been set in U.S. District Court in Los Angeles.
