BOISE, Idaho (AP) — A man driving a Porsche that plowed into a crowd of spectators at an Idaho car show was sentenced Friday to 180 days in jail, with all but seven days suspended.
Roy Drennon, 51, of the Boise suburb of Eagle, was convicted of reckless driving last month. As part of his sentence, he also was ordered to serve two years of supervised probation and do 100 hours of community service.
Police say Drennon drove into a crowd in a 2016 Porsche Spyder, injuring 11 people in a horrifying scene that had bystanders scrambling to help the victims. Authorities have said Drennon was "kind of showing off for the crowd" in September 2017 and lost control of the vehicle as he left a "Cars and Coffee" event in Boise.
"I am sorry, and it's the biggest mistake of my life, and I wish there was something I could do to take back that 15 seconds of my life," Drennon said at his sentencing. "I had no intention of hurting anyone, and I didn't know there were any kids there."
People injured in the crash reported broken bones, vision loss, head injuries that caused memory loss and speech difficulties, anxiety, nightmares and flashbacks.
The Idaho Statesman newspaper reported that prosecutors asked for Drennon to serve 30 days in jail, with 150 days suspended.
"What happened was completely preventable," Boise City Prosecutor Joshua Bishop said.
Judge Daniel Steckel said he believed Drennon was a good man but had a "colossal lapse in judgment." He ordered Drennon to be taken from the courtroom in handcuffs.
