NBA-ALL-STAR SATURDAY

Hield, Adebayo get All-Star wins...ASG MVP trophy named for Kobe Bryant

CHICAGO (AP) — Miami Heat forward Derrick Jones Jr. finally got his long-awaited dunk contest title as an exclamation point to an epic NBA All-Star Saturday Night.

Jones and Orlando forward Aaron Gordon needed two extra dunks apiece in the final round before deciding a winner. Jones prevailed, 48-47 in the one that determined who left with the trophy.

Former Heat guard Dwyane (dwayn) Wade was one of the judges. He said he wanted to have co-dunk contest winners but that the judges were told they had to pick a winner.

When Gordon picked the 7-foot-5 Tacko Fall to come out for his last dunk, it was the ultimate risk-reward moment as he needed 49 points to win. He didn’t totally clear Fall, and the judges gave him a 47 to finish one point behind Jones.

Buddy Hield (heeld) is the NBA’s reigning king of the long-range shooters.

The Sacramento Kings guard made a late surge to win the NBA 3-Point Contest. Hield nailed a two-point money ball from the corner to finish with 27 points, edging Phoenix Suns All-Star Devin Booker by one in the final round.

Miami's Bam Adebayo (ad-ah-BAY’-oh) captured the All-Star skills challenge, narrowly defeating Indiana's Domantas Sabonis (doh-MAHN’-tahs sah-BOH’-nihs) in the final in a matchup of All-Star big men. Adebayo eliminated 2018 champion Spencer Dinwiddie and Raptors star Pascal Siakam (see-A’-kam) in the first two rounds on the obstacle course.

Before the skills competitions, NBA Commissioner Adam Silver has announced that the Kia NBA All-Star Game MVP Award has been permanently named for the late Kobe Bryant.

Silver said in a press release that Bryant “is synonymous with NBA All-Star and embodies the spirit of this global celebration of our game.”

Bryant made his NBA All-Star Game debut in 1998 at age 19 and appeared in 17 other All-Star games, earning four MVP awards. Bryant, his daughter Gianna and seven other people died in a helicopter crash on Jan. 26.

Baker to MLB: Tell teams to 'stop the comments' on Astros

WEST PALM BEACH, Fla. (AP) — Dusty Baker wants Major League Baseball to end the criticism of the Astros over sign stealing and take steps to ensure pitchers don't throw at his players.

The new Houston manager spoke out Saturday in response to a wave of harsh comments during spring training about the Astros' use of video to steal signs in 2017 and 2018. Baker called on the league to “Stop the comments and also stop something before it happens.” He said he has been hearing talk of “seemingly premeditated retaliation.”

Dodgers first baseman Cody Bellinger said Friday the Astros “stole” the 2017 World Series title from them, and that Jose Altuve (al-TOO'-vay) stole the MVP from the Yankees' Aaron Judge. Los Angeles pitcher Ross Stripling indicated he might intentionally throw at Houston batters.
