WINNIPEG, Manitoba (AP) — Ottawa Redblacks quarterback Henry Burris was honored Thursday night as the Canadian Football League's most outstanding player.
The 40-year-old former Temple star received 71 of 75 first-place votes from the Football Reporters of Canada. He led the second-year Redblacks to the Grey Cup game Sunday night against the Edmonton Eskimos.
Burris had a CFL-record 481 completions and led the league in passing with 5,703 yards. He also won the award with Calgary in 2010.
Calgary quarterback Bo Levi Mitchell was the other finalist.
Ottawa's Rick Campbell was selected the coach of the year, receiver Brad Sinopoli the top Canadian and SirVincent Rogers the best offensive lineman. Campbell's father, Hugh, was coach of the year in 1979 with Edmonton, making them the first father-and-son winners.
B.C. Lions linebacker Adam Bighill was honored as the top defensive player, Hamilton kick returner Brandon Banks was selected the best special-teams player, and Edmonton receiver Derel Walker the top rookie. Bernie Custis, who in 1951 became pro football's first black starting quarterback with Hamilton, received the Commissioner's award, and Montreal tackle Jeff Perrett got the Jack Gaudaur Veterans' trophy.
