RACING AROUND THE MAT — Are you a sports fan or a video game nerd?

If you’re like me, you might be both.

And if you are like BYU gymnast Shannon Evans, you combine your love of the two.

That’s why Evans leads this week’s Great Clips. As always, click the video above for the best of sports from the weekend.

Keep college gymnastics weird

If you haven’t heard, BYU gymnastics lost for the 40th-straight time to No. 3 Utah last Friday night at the Marriott Center in Provo.

The Cougars recorded their highest season-opening score in program history, but ultimately fell to one of the best women’s gymnastics programs in the country, 197.25-196.475. Utah All-American MyKayla Skinner took the all-around title with a 39.60, but fellow All-American Shannon Evans of BYU was right behind her at 39.40.

And in the heavily-contested race of best video game in a floor exercise, Evans took home the gold medal.

The junior from American Fork performed a remarkable routine set to the soundtrack of Super Mario Bros. — yes, that Mario — as she flipped, twisted and spun around the mat gathering coins, collecting stars and bopping Koopas off the map.

The routine began with Evans on her basement floor, playing a round of Mario Kart, and ended with a 9.90, or 0.05 points behind Skinner.

BYU faces in-state rival Utah State at 7 p.m. Friday in Logan, while the Red Rocks head to Oregon State at 3 p.m. Saturday.

Back it up

Not much was going right for the Indianapolis Colts during the 31-13 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs in the AFC divisional round this weekend.

So Denico Autry was going to celebrate whatever success he could — even if it cost his team.

Autry stuffed the Chiefs on a 4th-and-5 play from the Colts’ 33, bringing down quarterback Patrick Mahomes for a 5-yard loss — and celebrating in fashion.

Hingle McCringleberry, he is not. But what’s the problem with the harmless fun?

Autry’s celebration came directly in front of an official, giving the Colts a 15-yard penalty that led to Andrew Luck and the offense punting after a drive that lasted less than two minutes.

Post-holiday cheer

College football is still a uniting force, even when the season ends.

So here we give a special shoutout to Kyle Whittingham, Zack Moss, Britain Covey and Jordan Howard, who took time off during a busy week with the Utes to visit longtime Utah fan Craig Hinton.

Hinton is battling cancer, and you can see his smile light up the room at this simple act of service in the video above.
