Will the walkout work?

Originally aired: Tuesday, March 13, 2018

Are your kids planning to participate in the school walkout? High school and junior high school kids plan to walk out of school to honor the 17 victims in the Parkland, Florida mass shooting. There will be calls for better gun control, some will just use it as an excuse to leave class. Locally, school districts are saying they don't want to restrict kids, but they still need to follow dismissal rules and are asking the kids to protest on campus in order to keep them safe. What is your plan if you have a child in high school? Are you going to do what you can to stop them or are you OK with them protesting? I have these conversations with my kids and it's a wonderful opportunity to see what they know and find out what they want. I know of some high schools that are trying to hold walk-ups instead. The idea is that the kids walk up to students they don't know and try to befriend them. That is a unique response to a complicated situation. How did we get here? On Wednesday, February 14th, a shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida left 17 dead and 14 wounded. The suspect has been identified as 19 year old Nikolas Cruz, a former student of the school who had been recently expelled from the school. Cruz reportedly took an Uber to the campus before the mass killing. He is believed to have used an AR-15 style semi-automatic rifle. According to KSL, two LDS girls were among the victims in the Florida school shooting, LDS Church officials said. These protests are a response to this tragedy.
