SPRINGDALE — The Kolob Canyons Visitor Center and several trails and roads in the canyon reopened Friday after a nine-month closure due to reconstruction, officials said.
The construction project began May 1, 2018, and was initially scheduled to last about seven months. The project included reconstructing sections of Kolob Canyon Road and repaving the entire roadway, as well as adding accessible parking, a sidewalk and two new bathroom facilities, according to a Zion National Park news release.
“The road is now safe for visitor use,” the news release stated. “In the spring when the weather improves, contractors will return to complete final paving and finish remaining project details, but the road will remain open.”
Along with the visitor center and the road, the parking lot off I-15 and several trails including The Taylor Creek Trail, the Timber Creek Overlook Trail, the Lee Pass Trailhead all reopened to the public Friday. Driving and hiking in those areas were not permitted during the closure.
Park officials said that weather-related closures may still occur so visitors should check road and trail conditions before planning a hike or camping trip.
