SALT LAKE CITY — A 19-year-old South Jordan man is taking his love of LEGO bricks and Nancy Drew to the next level by creating his own action figures as part of a LEGO IDEAS contest.

Andrew Williams wanted to make something that would embody resilience, adventure, intelligence and strength. With March being National Women's Month, Williams said that he also wanted to choose not only a female character for his design to portray, but one who would be a role model for women. Since Nancy Drew's 90th anniversary is also approaching, Williams' answer was clear.

"Growing up, I loved to read the Nancy Drew mystery books," he said in an email. "I don't know if it was the thrilling adventure and intrigue, or if it was the positive portrayal of a strong, intelligent young woman, but something within these books inspired me."

His medium of choice — LEGO bricks — allowed him to let his imagination run wild.

"They aren't limited to the product shown on the box," Williams said. "This structure gives custom builders, such as myself, the ability to create models that The LEGO Group hasn't even considered."

Williams' design is based off the "Curse of Blackmoor Manor," a Nancy Drew PC game, which was produced by HeR Interactive.

It follows Nancy Drew to England, where she investigates the secrets hidden in Blackmoor Manor. Williams' design includes eight characters, and two floors that house a secret passageway, a conservatory and a metal cage in which to catch thieves.

Williams, who is studying business management at Brigham Young University, said working with LEGO bricks since he was a child has built him into the person he is today. He said his lifelong dream has been to design something for the brand, and if his design is chosen, he hopes it will be a step toward more opportunities like this.

"I’ve been building with LEGO bricks ever since I was a little kid," he said. "The thing that I love most about LEGO is how limitless the possibilities are. Unlike other ‘toys,’ (I don't like calling them toys, because they are so much more than that!) LEGO bricks have the ability to create anything imaginable."

Williams’ design, "Nancy Drew: Curse of Blackmoor Manor" will need to get 10,000 votes to be reviewed by LEGO as a final contender to be produced as an official set.

The design can be viewed and voted on by following the link to the Nancy Drew design link on the LEGO IDEAS website.
