SALT LAKE CITY — The Utah Humane Society is having an adoption special from May 24-27 to waive pet adoption fees for members of the armed forces.

The organization, which provides shelter and care for homeless animals, partnered with the Animals for Armed Forces Foundation to waive adoption fees for all active and retired members of the military through Memorial Day weekend, according to a Humane Society press release.

The fee waiver applies to individuals in active duty, reserve, and veterans of the Navy, Air Force, Army, Marine Corps, Coast Guard and National Guard.

“Pets benefit our lives in so many ways, and the companionship offered by a pet can help military members and their families," said Vaughn Maurice, Utah Humane executive director, in the press release. "A pet may help someone suffering from PTSD, traumatic stress, or simply offer comfort to loved ones while an active family member is away.”

Animals adopted from the Utah Humane Society have all been spayed or neutered, vaccinated and microchipped, according to the news release. Members of the military can visit the adoption center at 4242 South 300 West in Murray over Memorial Day weekend from 10 a.m. until 5 p.m., including on Monday.

The Humane Society said in the news released that they’ve already had their longest-term resident dog, Cheerio, adopted thanks to the event.

A photo ID and some form of military ID is required for the adoption discount, according to the Humane Society. See what animals are available for adoption on the Utah Humane website.
