THE DANGER ZONE — Years ago Maverick and Ice Man taught us all how to live in the danger zone, and we quickly learned it's not that easy. Just ask Goose.
I can't fly a billion-dollar jet at face-melting speeds, but I do sometimes wait until the 13th of the month to pay my mortgage. I have also been known to ignore a "keep off the grass" sign once or twice in my lifetime. So, I have an idea of what the danger zone looks like.
While my trips to the DZ aren't as frequent as they once were, they'll never be as epic as that of a Rebel fighter pilot.
That's right, Maverick may have introduced us to the danger zone by buzzing the tower and pulling an inverted move at Mach 1, but has he ever taken on hundreds of Tie Fighters in the vast emptiness of space and then cruised into a canyon atop a Star Destroyer? I didn't think so.
If anyone is fit to do their thing to the Kenny Loggins classic, it’s the Rebel pilots — and thanks to this video they finally get the credit they deserve.
This is 3 minutes of pure joy as Red Leader and dozens of others strap into X-Wings and take to the stars as Kenny cheers them onto that coveted highway straight to the danger zone. Not all of those brave pilots will make it back, but they'll be forever remembered with memorials along the roadside. Admiral Ackbar may even adopt a section of that highway and dedicate it to these brave men and women of all shapes and sizes.
I already felt inadequate in the danger zone with Maverick, but now I really need to step up my game. If you need me, I'll be the one loitering in front of a 7-11 — because no placard is going to stop me from jumping on that highway to the danger zone.
