SALT LAKE CITY — The 2020 Sundance Film Festival will include a slate of 118 feature films from 27 countries, the Sundance Institute announced Wednesday.
The 2020 iteration of the annual independent film festival will take place from Jan. 23 to Feb. 2 in Park City, Salt Lake City and at Sundance Mountain Resort.
There were a record 15,100 submissions for the 2020 festival, including 3,853 feature film submissions, according to a news release from the Sundance Institute.
“This year’s festival is full of films that showcase myriad ways for stories to drive change, across hearts, minds, and societies,” Robert Redford, president and founder of the Sundance Institute, said in the release.
Ahead of last year’s festival, Sundance Institute organizers sought to feature a more diverse group of films and filmmakers for future Sundance festivals.
The narrative and documentary feature film slate for the festival includes 44 first-time directors, according to the release. Among the films announced Wednesday, 52 were directed by one or more women, and 40 were directed by one or more persons of color.

The films announced Wednesday will feature actors such as Steven Yeun, Zazie Beetz, Andy Samberg, Elizabeth Moss, Tessa Thompson and many others.
“The program this year, my last as director, is a celebration: of art and artists, yes, but also of the community that makes the annual pilgrimage to Park City to see the most exciting new work being made today,” festival director John Cooper said in the release. “Our 2020 festival's lively and visionary crop of artists has a contagious passion, and I can't wait to watch the world meet their work."
Cooper announced earlier this year he would be stepping aside as director after the 2020 festival. During last year's festival, Redford also announced he would be taking a backseat after being more hands-on in organizing past festivals.
